Inspirational Sales Quotes

Motivation and inspiration are two of the key elements to be successful in sales. I know because I’ve worked in sales (insurance, to be precise) for a couple of years (been there done that, in other words), and I know that more than anything else, you need that extra bit of motivation, impetus and drive to stay on top of the game when it comes to selling.

Here are a few inspirational sales quotes, the meaning behind these quotes, and their significance in the field of sales today:

1. “You don’t close a sale; you open a relationship if you want to build a long-term, successful enterprise.” – Patricia Fripp

Selling is all about networking and building strong and successful relations. A successful salesman never ‘sells’, he builds relationships. The traditional way of selling was all about delivering a strong sales pitch, and closing the sale. That doesn’t hold true anymore. Now though, making a sale is all about conversation that focuses on solving a specific problem and providing a real, tangible solution to the person on the other end. Instead of ‘would you be interested in buying insurance’, go with ‘I would just like a couple of minutes of your time to know if you’d be interested in listening to solutions on securing your long-term future and how you can start saving up for retirement’.

2. “Don’t sell life insurance. Sell what life insurance can do.” – Ben Feldman

This is related to the first quote above. Sales and selling shouldn’t be about selling a product or a service. Selling is all about providing solutions! Avoid lengthy sales pitches about your organization or your product – instead go straight to the point by asking the person on the other end whether they would be open to listening to a few solutions to the problems that they might be having, for instance.

3. “If you work just for money, you’ll never make it. But if you love what you are doing, and always put the customer first, success will be yours.” – Ray Kroc

This is a pretty good one, as it teaches us two golden rules of being successful in sales. It’s hardly a surprise when I see people in sales not doing well – they’re working for the money. Ultimately, they never do well, and are forced to look for other sources of livelihood. Sales and selling can be quite lucrative – provided you’re doing it for the right reasons. Another thing that this quote teaches us is putting the customer first – that is putting the customer’s needs, wants and priorities on the forefront.

4. “I do not think there is any other quality so essential to success of any kind as the quality of perseverance. It overcomes almost everything, even nature.” – John D. Rockefeller

This is perhaps one of the best, most inspirational quotes anyone in sales will find on this list. Selling can be tough – anyone affiliated with sales knows this. Makes big sales and closing a sale is never easy – it can be a long and tough process. You’ll start off with developing a planning and sales strategy, and will probably end up making calls upon calls, meeting multiple number of people, negotiate and follow-up with all of them, and a 100 different other things. And even all this doesn’t guarantee that the sale will be closed. In fact, sales people might often find themselves in a rut where they just can’t seem to make a single sale. Perseverance is key, and as someone who’s had his experience in sales, I know it’s easier said than done! But pulling yourself out of the rut and turning your fortunes around ultimately differentiates the winners from the losers.

5. “A salesman, like the storage battery in your car, is constantly discharging energy. Unless he is recharged at frequent intervals he soon runs dry. This is one of the greatest responsibilities of sales leadership.” – R. H. Grant

Brilliant! This great Robert Henry Grant quote – a Canadian politician – sums up the responsibility of sales leadership, such as a sales team lead, beautifully! As quote no. 5 above suggest – and as anyone associated or affiliated with sales will tell you – selling can be mentally exhausting. It’s a tough job (which might be one of the biggest understatements in the world!). A Sales Team Lead is responsible for many different tasks, such as communication, project management, coordination, and more. However arguably, some of his biggest responsibilities include motivation, appreciation, encouragement and reward. He needs to ensure that his team remains motivated and at the top of their game. A happy sales-team is a successful sales-team!
